Bezel

Bezel is a rim or frame that surrounds an opening, display, or component. Bezel edges may be metal, plastic, ceramic, or glass, and are used to secure, protect, or decorate the enclosed element. The term is used across multiple industries, and its exact function varies with context; it derives from the French biseau, meaning bevel.

In horology, the bezel encircles the dial on a wristwatch. It may be fixed or rotatable. Rotating bezels, especially on diving watches, allow the wearer to measure elapsed time. They are typically marked with numbers or minute markers and can be unidirectional for safety. Materials include stainless steel, aluminum, and ceramic, with inserts from ceramic or enamel. The bezel is mounted to the watch case and can contribute to water resistance in some designs.

In consumer electronics, the bezel refers to the border around a display screen. A narrow or “bezel-less” design reduces the unobstructed view area and influences device dimensions and ergonomics. Bezel frames also house sensors, cameras, or speakers.

In jewelry, a bezel setting uses a metal rim that encircles and secures a gemstone, usually with a continuous border that sits slightly above the stone. This setting protects the edges of the gem and is common for cabochon and faceted stones. Bezel can be full, wrapping entirely around the stone, or partial.

Other uses include architectural framing around glass panels, and the rim around a camera lens or display on devices. In all contexts, the bezel is primarily functional—holding, protecting, or framing the enclosed component—while contributing to the object's overall aesthetic.
