Kvanttivälejä, known in English as quantum dots, are tiny semiconductor nanoparticles that exhibit unique optical and electronic properties due to quantum mechanical effects. Their size is typically in the range of 2 to 10 nanometers, which is crucial for their behavior. When light strikes a quantum dot, it absorbs the energy and then re-emits it as light at a specific color. The color of the emitted light is directly dependent on the size of the quantum dot; smaller dots emit bluer light, while larger dots emit redder light. This tunability of color based on size is a defining characteristic.

The phenomenon responsible for these properties is quantum confinement. Electrons within the quantum dot are confined to a very small space, leading to discrete energy levels rather than the continuous bands found in bulk semiconductors. This confinement causes the band gap of the material to effectively increase with decreasing particle size. Quantum dots are synthesized using various chemical methods, often involving colloidal chemistry.

Applications for quantum dots are diverse and rapidly expanding. They are used in display technologies, such as QLED televisions, where they enhance color accuracy and brightness. In the field of biomedicine, they serve as fluorescent labels for imaging and diagnostics due to their bright and stable fluorescence. Research is also exploring their use in solar cells for improved energy conversion efficiency, as well as in quantum computing and other advanced electronic devices.
