Kuvaavuus, often used in psycholinguistics and cognitive psychology, refers to the ease with which a mental image can be evoked by a word, concept, or scenario. It captures how readily a person can form a concrete sensory representation in the mind, typically visual, but sometimes involving other senses as well. The concept is closely related to imagery and vividness, and it is commonly used to predict how easily information is remembered or processed.

Kuvaavuus is usually measured by human ratings on a Likert-type scale. Participants judge how easily the item elicits a mental image, and researchers compile averages to create imageability databases. In Finnish research and international projects, kuvaavuus work is often linked to, but distinct from, concreteness ratings; high imageability often coincides with concreteness, yet the two dimensions are not identical and can diverge for certain terms or contexts. Some studies use multiple scales, including vividness and sensory richness, to capture different aspects of imagery potential.

In cognitive processing, highly imageable words or concepts typically show processing advantages, such as faster lexical access, stronger memory traces, and easier recall, especially in imagery-based encoding tasks. Imageability interacts with factors like concreteness, emotional valence, and linguistic context, and its effects can vary with task demands and individual imagery ability.

Applications of kuvaavuus research include education, advertising, and language learning, where imagery-rich materials may support comprehension and retention. Limitations include subjectivity in ratings and cultural or experiential differences in imagery, which researchers address through large, diverse datasets and cross-linguistic comparisons.
