Kuume is the Finnish term for fever, a temporary rise in the body's core temperature above normal. Fever is usually defined as a body temperature of about 38°C (100.4°F) or higher when measured orally. It is typically a sign of an underlying illness or immune response rather than a disease itself.

Causes include infections (viral or bacterial), inflammatory or autoimmune conditions, medications, vaccines, heat-related illness, and, less commonly, certain cancers. In children and older adults, fever is a common presenting symptom of many illnesses.

Common accompanying symptoms include chills, sweating, shivering, fatigue, headaches, muscle aches, and loss of appetite. The pattern and duration of fever can help narrow possible causes; elderly individuals may have less typical symptoms.

Diagnosis involves measuring temperature with a reliable method, taking history and a physical examination, and identifying potential triggers. Additional tests, such as blood work, urine tests, imaging, or pathogen tests, are used if a serious illness is suspected or fever persists.

Most fevers can be managed with rest, fluids, and antipyretics such as paracetamol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen, following dosing guidelines. Antibiotics or antiviral medications are used only when a specific infection is suspected or confirmed. Aspirin is not recommended for children.

Seek medical advice when a fever lasts several days, is very high (roughly 39–40°C / 102–104°F), or is accompanied by severe symptoms such as chest pain, severe headache, confusion, stiff neck, dehydration, or difficulty breathing. Infants younger than three months with fever require prompt evaluation.
