Kuluhüvitis is a term that appears in some Estonian medical texts to describe an inflammatory condition of the mucous lining of the upper digestive tract. It is not part of the internationally standardized disease vocabulary, and its exact meaning can vary by source. In practice, kuluhüvitis is sometimes used interchangeably with gastritis or enteritis, depending on which part of the digestive tract is affected and the context of discussion.

Symptoms commonly associated with kuluhüvitis include upper abdominal pain or discomfort, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and sometimes fever. Diarrhea may accompany the process if the small intestine or colon is involved. The presentation can be acute or chronic, and symptoms may wax and wane.

Possible causes are diverse and may include infections (bacterial, viral, or parasitic), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug use, excessive alcohol consumption, bile acid irritation, autoimmune conditions, and chemical or radiation injury. External factors such as stress and dietary irritants can contribute, especially in predisposed individuals.

Diagnosis relies on clinical evaluation and may be supported by laboratory tests (blood counts, inflammatory markers, stool tests) and endoscopic examination with mucosal biopsy if gastritis is suspected. Imaging is rarely required unless complications are suspected. Because the term is heterogeneous, clinicians may also rely on broader diagnostic labels such as gastritis or enteritis.

Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause, relieving symptoms, and preventing complications. This may include hydration, antiemetics, acid-suppressing therapy, antimicrobial treatment when infection is suspected, and avoidance of irritants. Most cases are self-limited when the inciting factors are removed, though chronic disease requires ongoing management and follow-up.
