Kronhjort is the Swedish common name for the red deer (Cervus elaphus), a large deer species native to Europe and parts of Asia. The term is used in Swedish wildlife management and hunting contexts to refer to this species, which is one of the most conspicuous wild mammals in northern and central Europe.

Description and biology: Red deer are among the largest deer in Europe. Males (stags) typically weigh well over 100 kilograms, with larger individuals reaching higher weights, while females (hinds) are smaller. Antlers are found only on males and are shed and regrown annually; they are branched and can take on a crown-like silhouette during the rut. Red deer have a robust body, a short tail, and a coarse coat that fades with the seasons from reddish-brown in summer to grey-brown in winter. They are primarily herbivores, feeding on grasses, shoots, leaves, fruits, and bark, with their diet shifting seasonally.

Distribution and habitat: The red deer has a wide distribution across Europe and parts of Asia. In Sweden and other Nordic countries, kronhjort is commonly found in mixed forests, woodlands, and landscapes that include clearings or agricultural edges that provide grazing opportunities and cover.

Behavior and ecology: Red deer are social animals with female groups (hinds and fawns) and more solitary or bachelor groups of males. The rut occurs in autumn, when stags compete for access to females. Gestation lasts about seven to eight months, and most calves are born in late spring; twins occur but are less common. Populations are influenced by habitat quality, winter conditions, and management practices.

Conservation and cultural significance: The kronhjort is not globally threatened and is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. In many regions, it is a key game species and holds cultural and economic importance through hunting, forestry interactions, and wildlife viewing. Population management often involves regulated hunting to balance ecosystem health and human interests.
