Kompinstrument is a term used to describe an instrument whose primary function is to provide harmonic and rhythmic accompaniment in an ensemble, rather than carrying the melody. In many genres, especially jazz, pop, funk, and gospel, the instrument in a comping role supplies chords, rhythms, and texture that support soloists and the overall arrangement. The choice of kompinstrument depends on style and setting; common examples include piano and other keyboard instruments, guitar, and electric organ such as the Hammond. Less commonly, vibraphone, clavinet, accordion, or even bass guitar can fulfill rhythmic and harmonic support duties.

Techniques commonly associated with kompinstrument include playing chord voicings and rhythms that complement the rhythm section (bass and drums). Pianists or guitarists may use shell voicings (basic thirds and sevenths without the root), rootless voicings, or quartal voicings; patterns can range from steady on-beat comping to more syncopated, contrapuntal textures.
