Skills and roles. Successful guitarists combine technique with musicality. Core skills include accurate fretting, picking or strumming, timing and rhythm, and the ability to play melodies, chords, and improvisations. In groups, guitarists may serve as rhythm players, providing chordal accompaniment and groove, or as lead players, delivering melodies, solos, and effects; many artists blend these responsibilities.

History and styles. The guitar's development from early lutes to the modern acoustic and electric guitar broadened artistic possibilities. Classical guitarists such as Francisco Tárrega and Andrés Segovia established repertoire and technique for the instrument. The electric guitar helped shape 20th-century popular music, with influential players including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and B.B. King in blues and rock, and jazz guitarists such as Wes Montgomery expanding harmonies and vocabulary.

Training and equipment. Formal training, private study, or self-instruction are common paths. Practice typically covers scales, arpeggios, chord changes, sight reading or tablature, ear training, and repertoire. Equipment ranges from acoustic guitars to electric guitars, amplifiers, pedals, and cables, along with maintenance like string changes and setup.

Cultural role. Guitarists contribute to songwriting, arrangement, and studio sessions, and they influence musical tastes and trends. The guitarist's influence varies by genre, with some emphasizing virtuosity, others groove and tone, and many blending approaches to suit songs.
