Improvisations are performances or compositions created spontaneously in the moment, with little or no premeditated content. They rely on the performer’s trained instincts, sensitivity to the surrounding environment, and collaborative interaction. Improvisation spans many arts, including music, theatre, dance, and literature, and can occur within a framework of rules or within open-ended exploration.

Musical improvisation involves generating melodies, harmonies, and rhythms in real time, often within a given chord progression or modal framework. It is central to jazz and various folk or traditional styles. In Indian classical music, improvisation within the raga system is a foundational practice; Western classical cadenzas historically included improvised passages.

Theatrical improvisation, or improv, is performed without a script, relying on spontaneity, listening, and cooperation to develop scenes and characters. Techniques such as “Yes, and” and various games train performers to accept offers and advance the narrative.

Improv in dance encourages on-the-spot movement generation or the transformation of choreographic material through improvisational tasks. In literature, writers may practice improvisational writing or constrained exercises to provoke fresh ideas.

Practitioners often employ constraints, prompts, or scored cues to guide improvisation. Training emphasizes listening, timing, emotional awareness, and risk tolerance; repeated practice can increase fluency and reduce performance anxiety.

Critics sometimes distinguish between improvisation as a crafted art form and spontaneous failure; skilled improvisers typically combine spontaneity with an internalized set of techniques and memory of form.
