Kohvik is the Estonian word for a café or coffeehouse, denoting an establishment where coffee and light meals are served and where people meet for socializing, reading, or work. The term derives from kohv (coffee) with a nominal suffix and corresponds to similar concepts in European cafe culture.

A typical kohvik offers brewed coffee, espresso-based drinks, teas, pastries, cakes and simple savory dishes such as sandwiches and soups. Interiors range from small, cozy neighborhood spaces with local design and home-baked goods to larger urban venues that also host live music, exhibitions or informal meetings. Many kohvikud (plural) emphasize locally sourced ingredients and seasonal menus.

Historically, cafes in Estonia emerged in the 19th and early 20th centuries as urban meeting places. During the Soviet era some traditional establishments persisted alongside state-run canteens; since the late 20th century, independence and globalization spurred a revival and diversification of coffee culture, including specialty coffee and independent roasteries. Kohvikud play a role in everyday life and tourism, offering both quick service and leisurely dining.

Community events and pop-up cafes occasionally celebrate and expand kohvik culture, and the concept remains a visible part of Estonia’s public and social landscape, blending culinary, cultural and communal functions.
