Kinematography, often referred to as cinematography, is the art and technique of capturing moving images on film or digital media. It encompasses camera placement and movement, shot composition, lighting, exposure, lens choice, color, and the overall look of a production. The cinematographer, commonly titled the director of photography (DP), collaborates with the director to translate the script into visuals, making decisions on aspect ratio, lighting design, camera systems, and how movement supports storytelling.

Since the advent of motion pictures, kinematography has evolved from static, stage-like shots to dynamic camera work. Early innovations included panning and tilting; later came dollies, cranes, and steadicam. The shift from silent film to sound, the development of artificial lighting, and the move from film to digital sensors expanded possibilities for exposure and color. Modern kinematography blends traditional craft with digital workflows, high dynamic range imaging, and advanced color science.

Key elements include framing and composition, depth of field, and movement such as tracks, cranes, gimbal, and drone shots. Lens choice (short vs long focal lengths) shapes perspective and depth; lighting schemes define mood and texture, often using three-point lighting. Exposure, color temperature, white balance, and gamma affect tone. Aspect ratio, shot scale (close-up, medium, long), and continuity govern visual storytelling. Post-production color grading refines the final look.

Workflows begin in pre-production with shot lists and storyboards; on set, the DP manages camera and lighting crews, maintains visual continuity, and ensures safety. After filming, footage is processed, edited, and color graded to achieve the final appearance. Kinematography is central to style and narrative pace, influencing performance perception and audience engagement.
