Kiilteetöntä is a Finnish term that translates to "enamel-free" in English. It refers to a state or condition where tooth enamel is absent or significantly reduced. Tooth enamel is the hard, outer protective layer of a tooth, primarily composed of minerals, making it the hardest substance in the human body. Its main function is to shield the underlying dentin and pulp from wear and tear, as well as from temperature changes and chemical attacks from acids produced by bacteria.

The absence or loss of enamel can be caused by various factors. Congenital conditions can result in enamel hypoplasia, where enamel development is incomplete, leading to thinner or missing patches. Acquired causes are more common and include dental erosion, which is the loss of tooth structure due to chemical processes, often from acidic foods, drinks, or stomach acid. Abrasion, caused by aggressive brushing with abrasive toothpaste or using hard-bristled toothbrushes, can also wear away enamel. Attrition, the wear of teeth from grinding or clenching (bruxism), is another contributing factor. Dental caries, or tooth decay, begins when acids demineralize and break down enamel.

When enamel is lost, the underlying dentin becomes exposed. Dentin is softer and more porous than enamel, making the tooth more susceptible to sensitivity, pain, and further damage. Exposed dentin can appear yellowish, as dentin is naturally more yellow than enamel. In severe cases of enamel loss, the tooth's structure can be significantly compromised, potentially leading to fracture or the need for restorative dental treatments such as fillings, crowns, or veneers. Maintaining good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental check-ups are crucial for protecting tooth enamel.
