Kihtikohtaus refers to a sudden and severe episode of gout, a type of inflammatory arthritis. Gout is characterized by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, leading to intense pain, swelling, redness, and heat. A kihtikohtaus typically affects a single joint, most commonly the big toe, but can also occur in the ankles, knees, elbows, wrists, or fingers.

The onset of a kihtikohtaus is often rapid, with symptoms developing over a few hours. The pain is described as excruciating and can be so severe that even the weight of a bedsheet on the affected joint is unbearable. Other symptoms may include fever, chills, and fatigue. The exact cause of a kihtikohtaus is not always clear, but it is often triggered by certain factors. These can include consuming alcohol, especially beer, or eating foods high in purines, such as red meat, organ meats, and seafood. Dehydration, certain medications, and trauma to a joint can also precipitate an attack.

Diagnosis of a kihtikohtaus is usually based on the patient's medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Blood tests may reveal elevated uric acid levels, and in some cases, a joint fluid analysis can confirm the presence of uric acid crystals. Treatment aims to relieve pain and inflammation and prevent future attacks. This may involve nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), colchicine, or corticosteroids. Long-term management focuses on lowering uric acid levels through medication and dietary and lifestyle modifications.
