A bedsheet is a sheet of fabric used as part of bed linen to cover a mattress and provide a sleeping surface. In common use, it may refer to either the flat sheet that lies between the sleeper and the blanket or the fitted sheet that fits the mattress; many sets include both.

There are two main types. A flat sheet is rectangular with no elastic. A fitted sheet has elasticized corners to grip the mattress and varies by pocket depth to fit different mattress thicknesses. Sizing follows regional standards.

Fabrics vary: cotton (including long-staple types such as Egyptian or Pima), linen, microfiber, and bamboo blends are common. Weave affects feel: percale for a crisp, cool surface; sateen for a softer, smoother finish. Thread count is not the only measure of quality.

Care typically involves machine washing and moderate tumble drying, following the care label. Avoid excessive heat and, for colored fabrics, chlorine bleach. A well-fitted sheet helps prevent shifting during sleep.

Historically, bed linens evolved from simple linens to specialized sheets designed for comfort and durability. Today, bedsheets range from economical cotton blends to luxury long-staple cottons and other fibers, reflecting regional preferences and climate.
