Kielenhäiriöön, often referred to as a tongue tie, is a condition present from birth that restricts the tongue's range of motion. This restriction is caused by an unusually short, thick, or tight band of tissue (the lingual frenulum) that attaches the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth. In most individuals, the frenulum is short but flexible, allowing for full tongue movement. In those with kielenhäiriöön, this attachment is more restrictive.

The severity of kielenhäiriöön can vary. Mild cases may go unnoticed or cause minimal issues, while more significant restrictions can impact a range of functions. Infants may experience difficulties with breastfeeding, leading to poor latch, shallow sucking, and pain for the mother. Older children and adults might face challenges with speech articulation, making certain sounds difficult to pronounce clearly. Eating can also be affected, with potential problems chewing and swallowing certain foods. Other possible issues include dental problems like gaps between the lower front teeth or difficulty keeping teeth clean, and issues with activities like licking an ice cream cone or playing a wind instrument.

Diagnosis is typically made by a healthcare professional, such as a pediatrician, dentist, or lactation consultant, through a physical examination of the tongue's movement. Treatment options depend on the severity of the condition and the presence of symptoms. For mild cases, no intervention may be necessary. In more significant cases, a simple surgical procedure called a frenotomy may be performed. This involves cutting the lingual frenulum to release the restriction. The procedure is generally quick, safe, and can be done with minimal discomfort, often without the need for anesthesia in infants. Following the procedure, some exercises may be recommended to help improve tongue mobility.
