kaksosraskaudet
Kaksosraskaudet refer to pregnancies where two fetuses develop simultaneously within the uterus. This type of multiple pregnancy is relatively common, with the likelihood of conceiving twins increasing with maternal age and the use of fertility treatments. There are two main types of twin pregnancies: identical (monozygotic) and fraternal (dizygotic). Identical twins develop from a single fertilized egg that splits into two embryos, resulting in fetuses with the same genetic makeup. Fraternal twins develop from two separate eggs fertilized by two different sperm, meaning they are genetically no more alike than any other siblings.
The diagnosis of a twin pregnancy typically occurs early in gestation, often during the first trimester ultrasound.
