Kaatopaikan is the Finnish term for a landfill, a site where waste is deposited and disposed by burial. Modern kaatopaikat are designed to contain waste in a way that minimizes environmental impact, controls emissions, and protects surrounding soil, water, and air.

A typical kaatopaikan design includes several layers and systems. A bottom liner and a leachate collection system prevent contaminated liquid from reaching groundwater. A gas collection system captures methane and other gases produced as waste decomposes. The waste is deposited in cells and compacted to maximize capacity, with daily cover to reduce odors, pests, and windblown material. When the facility reaches capacity, it is capped with a final layer and subjected to long-term monitoring and maintenance.

Environmental considerations and risks are central to landfill management. Leachate and gas can pose risks to groundwater, soil, and air quality if not properly controlled. Odor, nuisances, and traffic are also concerns. Ongoing monitoring of groundwater, surface water, gas emissions, and settlement is typical, as is regular reporting to regulatory authorities.

In the European Union, landfills are subject to directives and national waste legislation that promote reduction of landfill use, pollution control, and post-closure care. Alternatives to disposal at kaatopaikat include recycling, composting or anaerobic digestion, and energy recovery from waste, in line with the waste hierarchy that prioritizes prevention and reuse over final disposal.
