Kaarkeevituses, often translated as arc welding, is a fusion welding process that utilizes an electric arc to melt and join metal pieces. This arc is formed between an electrode and the base metal, generating intense heat that melts the materials at the point of contact. As the molten metal cools, it solidifies, creating a strong, permanent bond.

There are several types of arc welding, each employing different methods for controlling the arc and protecting the molten weld pool. Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), also known as stick welding, uses a consumable electrode coated in flux. The flux decomposes during welding, producing shielding gases that prevent atmospheric contamination of the weld. Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), or MIG welding, uses a continuous wire electrode fed through a welding gun, with a shielding gas supplied separately to protect the arc and weld pool. Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), or TIG welding, employs a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a separate filler metal if required, with shielding gas protecting the arc.

The application of kaarkeevituses is widespread, found in industries ranging from manufacturing and construction to automotive repair and shipbuilding. Its versatility allows for the joining of various metals, including steel, aluminum, and stainless steel, making it a fundamental process in modern fabrication. The quality of the weld depends on factors such as proper preparation of the metal surfaces, correct selection of electrode or wire, amperage and voltage settings, and the skill of the welder.
