The word combines juoksu, meaning running, with rata, meaning track, and the form on the end (radoilla) indicates “on the tracks.” In Finnish athletics discourse, juoksuradoilla typically denotes the outdoor or indoor venues where running events are held, including the track surface, lanes, and surrounding facilities.

A standard outdoor juoksuradoilla is usually 400 meters in circumference and features multiple parallel lanes, commonly eight on international competition tracks. The curves and straightaways are designed to accommodate a range of events from sprints to distance races, as well as hurdling and relay competitions. Indoor tracks are shorter, often around 200 meters per lap, with tighter curves. The choice of venue may vary, with some stadiums offering eight or more lanes and others providing fewer lanes on smaller or indoor facilities.

Surfaces used on juoksuradoilla have evolved from cinder or dirt to modern synthetic materials, such as polyurethane-based or rubberized surfaces often referred to as tartan tracks. These surfaces aim to provide consistent grip and shock absorption to athletes and require regular maintenance and resurfacing over time. The track area includes facilities for timing, lane marking, and safety features such as run-off zones and proper barrier placements.
