Jordgrävare is the Swedish term for excavators, a class of heavy construction machines used for digging, trenching and moving large quantities of soil. The word is commonly applied to hydraulic excavators, which operate with a hydraulic arm consisting of a boom, a stick and a bucket. Mini or compact jordgrävare are smaller variants designed for confined spaces.

Most jordgrävare are either tracked or wheeled for mobility on construction sites. They feature a rotating cab that enables 360-degree operation, and a hydraulic system that powers the boom, stick and bucket. Attachments can be exchanged to perform tasks such as breaking concrete, lifting, drilling or gripping materials, making the machine adaptable to a range of applications.

Applications include foundations and building work, road construction, utilities installation, drainage and landscaping, as well as mining and forestry tasks. The operation requires trained personnel; safety features common on modern machines include load-sensing hydraulics, anti-two-block systems, swing brakes and protective cabins with rollover and falling-object protection. Regular maintenance and adherence to manufacturer guidelines are essential for reliability and safety.

Variants and technology continue to expand the field. In addition to standard midi and large excavators, there are long-reach, compact or zero-tail-swing models designed for tight spots. Advances include GPS-based machine control, telematics for fleet management, and increasingly electrified or hybrid powertrains in response to emissions and fuel efficiency concerns.

Etymology and usage: in Swedish, jordgrävare denotes excavators and the act of earth excavation on job sites. The term should not be confused with grave-digging terminology, which uses different words in Swedish.
