gravedigging
Gravedigging is the act of digging graves for the burial of human remains in a cemetery, and, in some contexts, the exhumation of graves for relocation or reburial. In most places it is performed by trained cemetery workers or sextons under funeral directors’ oversight. The work encompasses opening a grave at the designated site, lowering the casket or urn, backfilling with soil, and restoring the surface to blend with the surroundings. Staff may also participate in record-keeping, plot mapping, and coordinating with religious or cultural practices.
Tools range from hand implements such as shovels, picks, and trowels to mechanical excavators in larger sites.
