Interpreti are professionals who convert spoken language from one language to another, either in real time or after a speaker has finished. The term is the Italian plural of interprete and is used to describe practitioners across a range of settings, from international conferences to courts, hospitals, media, and business meetings.

The main modes of interpretation include simultaneous interpretation, where interpreters translate as the speaker talks, often from a soundproof booth with headsets and microphones; consecutive interpretation, where the speaker pauses to allow the interpreter to render the message in the target language; and whispered interpretation (chuchotage), used for small audiences. For sign language users, interpreti may provide interpreting between spoken language and a sign language, such as Italian Sign Language (LIS).

Interpreters rely on high-level language proficiency, cultural competence, strong memory, note-taking skills, and the ability to work under pressure. They must convey meaning, tone, and nuance while maintaining neutrality and confidentiality. Training typically involves university programs in interpretation or translation, practical internships, and ongoing professional development. Certification or accreditation is offered by various bodies and professional associations, which also provide ethical guidelines and standards for practice. International organizations and national associations, such as the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) and other regional groups, play an important role in setting professional norms and facilitating networking and career opportunities.

Equipment and environments vary by setting but often include interpretation booths, sound systems, and remote interpretation platforms in modern conferences. The field continues to adapt to advances in technology, including remote and hybrid events, while maintaining core demands for accuracy, impartiality, and cultural sensitivity.
