Inktwash is a term used in contemporary art to describe a technique that uses diluted ink to create tonal washes on a variety of substrates. It blends elements of traditional ink wash with modern pigments and application methods, allowing for smooth gradations and luminous darks.

Technique and materials: Artists mix pigment-based or dye-based inks with water, alcohol, or other diluents to achieve transparent layers. The diluted ink is applied with brushes, sponges, or airbrush tools, enabling controlled transitions from pale grays to deep blacks. Layers are typically built up since each pass remains semi-transparent. Masking fluid or frisket can protect highlights, enabling sharper edges within a predominantly soft field.

Substrates and process: Inktwash works well on watercolor or drawing papers, smooth hot-pressed papers, canvas, and certain fabrics, provided the ink formulation is compatible with the surface. The process emphasizes planning core values before layering, allowing drying between passes to reduce bleed and promote edge control. Finishes range from atmospheric washes to crisp line work achieved by selective masking or resist.

Relation to traditional techniques: Inktwash is related to East Asian ink wash painting in its emphasis on tonal value and atmosphere but generally employs modern inks and tools, broadening practical applications in illustration, concept art, and mixed-media works. Variants may emphasize color washes or monochrome study, depending on artist preference.
