An inkset is the collection of ink formulations used by a printer to render color on media. It defines the colors available, the type of colorant (pigment or dye), and the arrangement of cartridges or channels that dispense them. The inkset influences color reproduction, tonal range, and print longevity, and it interacts with the printer’s hardware and drivers to determine the achievable gamut and gradation quality.

Most consumer printers use a CMYK inkset: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. Professional and high-end devices often use extended inksets that add light cyan and light magenta (the Lc/Lm channels) to improve smoothness in gradients and midtones. Some configurations also include light gray or multiple gray inks to enhance neutral tonality, while others add orange, green, or red to widen the color gamut for photographs and graphics.

Color accuracy and consistency depend on matching the inkset with appropriate color profiles (ICC profiles) and substrates. In workflows that switch inksets or use removable cartridges, profiles must be created or installed for each inkset/substrate combination. Printer firmware and drivers may expose an inkset selection, which can affect rendering and color management.

Among ink types, pigment-based inks generally offer better archival stability on common papers, while dye-based inks can yield brighter colors but fade more quickly. Inks and their carriers also influence longevity, water resistance, and compatibility with media coatings. Cost, availability, and maintenance requirements—such as cartridge refills or ink tank systems—are practical considerations when choosing an inkset.
