An inkset is a defined collection of inks used by a printing or writing system. In digital printing, the term describes the specific group of inks carried by a printer, typically in cartridges or tanks, and chosen to produce a desired color gamut, contrast, and longevity. The inkset interacts with the media, the printer’s printheads, and the color management workflow to determine the final appearance of prints.

Common configurations range from the basic four-color CMYK set (cyan, magenta, yellow, black) to expanded sets that add additional colors to broaden the color gamut. Expanded inksets may include light cyan and light magenta for smoother gradients, or extra color channels such as orange, green, or violet to improve reproduction of certain hues. Some high-end archival printers use pigment-based inks in layered configurations to enhance durability and colorfastness.

Ink types within an inkset fall mainly into dye-based and pigment-based categories. Dye inks often offer brighter colors and lower cost but lower lightfastness, while pigment inks tend to provide greater longevity and resistance to fading but can produce different color properties. Hybrid approaches and varnish or gloss inks may also be used in specialized inksets.

When selecting an inkset, users consider gamut coverage, archival properties, drying times, media compatibility, and maintenance needs. Inksets are typically paired with ICC profiles and RIP software to achieve predictable color output across different media and lighting conditions. In artistic contexts, the term can also refer to a curated set of inks used for drawing or calligraphy, chosen for permanence, flow, and tonal range.
