History: The concept arose with the expansion of technical education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, combining shop floor experience with formal instruction. In Norway and other Nordic countries, industriværksteder were integral to the vocational education system and to industrial modernization, often linked to apprenticeship schemes and early forms of in-house training.

Function: They provide space for metalwork, woodworking, machining, welding, electronics, automation, and other trades. Activities range from basic skill development and project work to prototyping and maintenance of school or company equipment. In modern contexts, they may include computer numerical control (CNC) machines, CAD/CAM workstations, robotics, and programmable logic controllers.

Organisation and governance: Typically supervised by instructors or technicians, with safety rules, tool control, and material handling protocols. They may operate as part of a school program, a vocational college, or as an internal service workshop within a company.
