Incunabula, often referred to as incunabula books, are books printed in Europe with movable type during the infancy of book printing, roughly between 1450 and 1500, with some scholars extending the end date to 1501. The term emphasizes the early stage of the printing press, distinguishing these works from handwritten manuscripts.

Incunabula cover a wide range of texts, including religious works, classical and humanist scholarship, liturgical books, primers, and secular literature. They were produced in major European centers such as Mainz, Venice, Paris, Nuremberg, and Heidelberg. Key printers include Johannes Gutenberg (the Mainz Bible, c. 1455), Johann Fust and Peter Schöffer, and Nicolas Jenson; Italian and German styles coexisted. Typical formats included folio, quarto, and octavo, and typography encompassed blackletter and early roman types. Illustrations were commonly woodcuts, and colophons provide printers’ statements about production.

The incunabula period marks a major shift in the transmission of knowledge, contributing to standardization of texts, broader literacy, and the spread of humanist scholarship. Scholars study incunabula for dating, provenance, printers’ devices, and typefaces, as well as for bibliographic and paleographic insights. Large portions of the surviving body are held in national and research libraries, including the British Library, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the German National Library, and the Library of Congress, among others. The study and cataloging of incunabula continue to inform bibliographic methods and the understanding of early print culture.
