The term "ihokokeiden" is a Finnish word that translates to "skin tests" in English. It refers to a group of diagnostic procedures used to identify allergies or sensitivities to various substances. These tests are commonly employed in dermatology and allergology to help patients and clinicians understand the triggers behind allergic reactions.

There are several types of ihokokeiden, with the most prevalent being the prick test, also known as a puncture or scratch test. In this method, a small amount of a suspected allergen is placed on the skin, usually on the forearm or back, and the skin is lightly pricked or scratched to allow the allergen to enter the superficial layer. Another common type is the patch test, where suspected allergens are applied to the skin, often on the back, and covered with patches for a period of 24 to 48 hours to observe for delayed reactions. Intradermal tests involve injecting a small amount of allergen into the dermis layer of the skin.

The results of ihokokeiden are typically assessed by observing the skin's reaction at the test site. For prick tests, a raised, itchy bump called a wheal, often surrounded by a red flare, indicates a positive reaction to that specific allergen. Patch tests are evaluated for redness, swelling, or blistering. These tests are valuable tools for diagnosing a wide range of allergic conditions, including hay fever, asthma, eczema, and certain food allergies, enabling targeted treatment and avoidance strategies.
