Idiopatik, commonly translated as idiopathic in English, is a medical term used to describe diseases or conditions for which the underlying cause remains unknown. The word derives from the Greek idios, meaning “one's own” or “private,” and pathos, meaning “suffering” or “disease.” In Turkish medical usage, idiopatik is the standard term for idiopathic.

In clinical practice, a condition is labeled idiopathic after a thorough evaluation fails to identify a secondary or external cause. This usually involves a detailed history, physical examination, targeted laboratory tests, imaging, and sometimes more specialized studies. The label emphasizes that the current evidence does not reveal a clear etiology. It does not imply that no cause exists; rather, that none has been demonstrated with available methods.

Common examples include idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, idiopathic scoliosis, and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Some conditions initially deemed idiopathic later yield identifiable associations—genetic factors, immune processes, environmental exposures, or malformations—leading to a revised diagnosis.

The use of idiopathic as a diagnosis highlights areas of scientific uncertainty and ongoing research. As knowledge advances, some idiopathic conditions acquire known causes, while others remain unresolved. In research contexts, idiopathic forms are often the focus of studies seeking genetic predispositions or novel pathophysiological mechanisms.
