Idealtypus, a German term meaning “ideal type,” is a methodological construct used primarily in the social sciences to analyze complex social phenomena. The concept was introduced by the German sociologist Max Weber in the early twentieth century as a tool for comparative analysis. An Idealtypus is not meant to represent a perfect or normative model; rather, it abstracts certain characteristic features from empirical reality to create a simplified, heuristic reference point.
