Methodological approaches range from ethnography and interviews to statistical modeling and computational social science.

Historically influential sociologists such as Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, and Harriet Martineau helped define the discipline, along with later figures like W. E. B. Du Bois and C. Wright Mills. The field continues to evolve with emphasis on ethics, reproducibility, and the application of social knowledge to policy and practice.
