Hánytatás, also known as induced vomiting or emesis, is the act of causing a person or animal to vomit. This can be done through various methods, including the administration of emetic drugs or by physical stimulation of the gag reflex. Historically, inducing vomiting has been employed in several contexts, including for medicinal purposes and as a form of self-harm or abuse.

In medical settings, inducing vomiting was once a common treatment for poisoning. The rationale was to remove the ingested toxic substance before it could be absorbed into the bloodstream. However, this practice has largely fallen out of favor due to concerns about its effectiveness and potential complications. These complications can include aspiration of vomit into the lungs, esophageal tears, and electrolyte imbalances. Current medical guidelines generally advise against inducing vomiting for most types of poisoning, instead recommending activated charcoal or other decontamination methods.

Psychologically, inducing vomiting can be associated with eating disorders, particularly bulimia nervosa. In this context, vomiting is used as a compensatory behavior to prevent weight gain after consuming large amounts of food. This behavior is harmful and can lead to serious health problems, including dental erosion, dehydration, and damage to the esophagus and stomach.

In veterinary medicine, inducing vomiting may still be recommended by a veterinarian in specific cases of poisoning, depending on the substance ingested and the time elapsed since ingestion. It is crucial for pet owners to consult a veterinarian immediately if they suspect their animal has ingested something toxic, as administering emetics without professional guidance can be dangerous.
