Hip pain, often referred to as höftsmärta in Swedish, is a common ailment that can arise from various causes. It can manifest as a dull ache or a sharp, intense pain, and its location can vary, sometimes being felt directly in the hip joint, the groin, the buttocks, or even radiating down the leg.

The hip joint is a ball-and-socket joint, allowing for a wide range of motion. However, its complex structure makes it susceptible to injuries and degenerative conditions. Common causes of hip pain include osteoarthritis, a wear-and-tear condition affecting the cartilage; bursitis, inflammation of the fluid-filled sacs that cushion the hip joint; and tendinitis, inflammation of the tendons surrounding the hip. Fractures, particularly in older individuals with osteoporosis, are another serious cause of hip pain.

Other factors contributing to hip pain can include muscle strains, ligament sprains, and impingement syndromes where bones of the hip rub against each other abnormally. Less common causes might involve nerve compression, infections, or referred pain from other areas of the body, such as the lower back.

The severity and type of hip pain can provide clues to its origin. Pain that worsens with activity, stiffness in the morning, or a limited range of motion are typical symptoms. Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, patient history, and may require imaging tests like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans. Treatment strategies are tailored to the underlying cause and can range from rest, ice, and pain medication to physical therapy, injections, and in some cases, surgery.
