Hiperandrogénicas refers to a condition characterized by an excess of androgens, often called male hormones, in the body. In women, this can manifest as hirsutism, which is excessive hair growth in a male-like pattern on the face, chest, and back. It can also cause acne, irregular menstrual cycles, alopecia (hair loss) on the scalp, and deepening of the voice. In males, while less common to discuss in terms of "hiperandrogénicas" as it's their natural state, extremely high levels can potentially lead to issues like premature puberty or aggressive behavior.

The underlying causes of hiperandrogénicas are diverse. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause in women, a hormonal disorder that also affects ovulation and can lead to ovarian cysts. Other potential causes include congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a genetic disorder affecting the adrenal glands, and androgen-secreting tumors of the ovaries or adrenal glands, though these are rarer. Certain medications can also contribute to elevated androgen levels.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history, physical examination, and blood tests to measure hormone levels. Imaging techniques like ultrasound or CT scans may also be used to identify the source of excess androgen production. Treatment strategies are tailored to the underlying cause and can include lifestyle modifications, medications to lower androgen levels or manage symptoms like acne and irregular periods, and in some cases, surgical intervention.
