Hindquarters is a term used to describe the posterior portion of the body in humans and other animals, especially quadrupeds. It encompasses the pelvis and the paired hind limbs, along with the muscles and connective tissues that power and stabilize the section. In veterinary and horseracing contexts, the hindquarters are often considered in conformation, movement, and health assessments.

Anatomically, the hindquarters include the pelvic girdle (the pelvis), the sacrum, the proximal portions of the hind limbs, and the associated muscle groups. In many mammals, key muscles include the gluteal muscles (maximus, medius, minimus), the hamstrings, and the adductors, together with supporting ligaments and joints such as the hip and sacroiliac joints. In humans, the term is commonly used to refer to the buttocks region and the surrounding posterior pelvis.

Functions of the hindquarters include weight bearing, propulsion, and stability during standing, walking, running, and jumping. The hindquarters often contribute most of the propulsive power in fast locomotion, especially in horses and canids, where hind limb extension drives movement and supports the body during the stride.

Variation and health: Hindquarter structure varies across species and breeds, influencing gait and performance. Conformation defects or injuries, such as hip dysplasia, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, or muscular strains, can impair mobility and cause lameness. Proper conditioning, veterinary assessment, and, in agriculture, selective breeding aim to optimize hindquarter function and welfare.

Other uses: In meat production, hindquarters refer to the rear portion of a carcass and include cuts such as the rump and hind leg in many species; terminology and cut locations vary by cuisine and industry.
