High burnup refers to nuclear fuel that has been irradiated to a higher level of energy production than is typical for standard fuel cycles. It is most commonly discussed in the context of light-water reactors, where burnup is measured in gigawatt-days per metric ton of uranium (GWd/MTU). While conventional fuels often reach ranges around 40–60 GWd/MTU, high-burnup fuels exceed roughly 60 GWd/MTU and, in certain designs, may approach or exceed 70–100 GWd/MTU.
