Helyüktl is an ancient urban site and former capital located on the central coast of the fictional archipelago of Nyridia. The site covers a hillside citadel that overlooks a protected harbor, with lower residential quarters arranged on terraces and connected by broad stairways and causeways. The name helyüktl comes from the Helyu language, commonly interpreted as “bright gate” or “harbor light,” though precise meaning remains debated among scholars.

History: The settlement appears in inscriptions dating to the 6th century CE. It rose to regional prominence between the 9th and 11th centuries, serving as both political seat and ceremonial center, with a maritime economy built on pottery, metalwork, and long-distance exchange. The urban core displays evidence of planned integration between public spaces and water management. The site declined after the 12th century, likely due to natural events and shifts in trade networks, and was largely abandoned by the 14th century.

Archaeology: Systematic excavations began in the late 19th century and intensified during the mid-20th century. Finds include glazed ceramics, carved reliefs, and inscriptions in the Helyu script. The architectural layout indicates a layered city, featuring a fortified citadel, a main plaza, and a sea-facing gate.
