Health monitoring is the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of health-related data to assess the health status of individuals or populations over time. It supports early detection of health changes, evaluation of interventions, and informed decision making in clinical care, public health, and personal wellness. It can be passive or active, real-time or periodic, and may involve individuals or communities.

Data sources include wearable sensors that track heart rate, activity, sleep, and respiration; home medical devices measuring blood pressure, glucose, or weight; electronic health records; laboratory results; imaging findings; and patient-reported outcomes. Data may be streamed continuously or captured during periodic checkups and can be combined with environmental and behavioral information for context and trend analysis.

Applications range from chronic disease management and postoperative monitoring to elderly and neonatal care, as well as public health surveillance and research. Benefits include earlier detection of deterioration, tailored treatment adjustments, reduced hospital admissions, and improved care coordination. In population health, surveillance helps monitor disease prevalence, health risks, and the impact of interventions, informing policy and resource allocation.

Key challenges include protecting privacy and securing data, ensuring interoperability across systems, and maintaining data quality and standardization. Consent, governance, and equitable access are critical ethical concerns, as is avoiding algorithmic bias and alert fatigue from alarms. Effective health monitoring relies on clear data ownership policies, transparent use of data, user-friendly interfaces, and adherence to regulatory frameworks that safeguard individuals while enabling beneficial insights.
