Hautajaisten is a Finnish term referring to funeral rites and ceremonies surrounding death. In everyday usage it denotes both the events themselves and the process of organizing them. Typically a funeral in Finland is planned by the family with the assistance of a funeral director. The sequence commonly includes a wake or viewing, a funeral service in a church or chapel, and a procession to a cemetery for burial or to a crematorium for cremation. A memorial service may follow.

Most Finns belong to Lutheran or other Christian denominations, but secular and other faith traditions maintain their own rites. Cremation is common; in many cases the body is cremated and ashes interred or kept in an urn. Some ceremonies are non-religious and focus on personal readings, music, and memories.

Legal formalities govern death and burial. A physician must certify death, and authorities issue a death certificate and a burial permit. The funeral arrangements, cemetery or cremation plots, and any necessary permits are handled through municipal services and/or a licensed funeral home.

Etiquette and customs emphasize consolation and respectful dress, often with subdued colors. Flowers and cards are common, and close friends may participate in the procession or singing. In contemporary practice, many families also arrange “celebrations of life” or online memorials to reflect the deceased’s life.
