Common areas include graphics rendering and video processing, where GPU-based render pipelines and dedicated video encoders/decoders offload work from the CPU; cryptography, where hardware modules speed encryption; AI and machine learning inference, where tensor processing units, GPUs, or NPUs accelerate neural networks; networking and storage, where line-rate encryption, compression, and packet processing can be hardware-assisted.

Software interfaces and standards such as DirectX Video Acceleration (DXVA), VA-API, VDPAU on different platforms, OpenCL, CUDA, Vulkan compute, and Metal provide ways for developers to use hardware acceleration. The use of hardware acceleration can improve frame rates, reduce latency, and lower power consumption, but it also introduces dependencies on device hardware, drivers, and vendor-specific APIs. If the hardware is unavailable or drivers are outdated, applications may fall back to software rendering.

Considerations include portability across devices, driver maturity, and potential differences in feature support.
