It refers to artwork or animation created primarily by hand using traditional media, such as pencil, ink, charcoal, or watercolor, rather than by computer-generated methods. In Swedish usage, the term can describe drawings, illustrations, comics, or animation that preserves the tactile qualities of hand-made lines and textures.

In visual arts, handtecknad work is often distinguished by visible pencil marks, irregular line width, and the texture of paper. In animation, handtecknad 2D refers to frame-by-frame drawing, historically produced on paper and, in later stages, inked, painted, and then photographed or scanned to create motion pictures.
