The outputs typically include digitized habitat maps, a legend of habitat types, accompanying metadata, and assessments of habitat quality or conservation status. Maps are produced using standardized classification schemes and spatial analysis in geographic information systems, often combining field survey data with remote sensing, aerial photography, LiDAR, or drone imagery. Ground-truthing and accuracy assessment are common to validate the map.

Applications include identifying priority areas for protection or restoration, informing environmental impact assessments, supporting national or regional conservation policies and networks, such as Natura 2000 in Europe, and monitoring changes in habitat extent and condition over time.
