Hüpertrichoos, commonly referred to in medical literature as hypertrichosis, is a condition characterized by excessive hair growth on various parts of the body that goes beyond what is typical for a person’s age, sex, and ethnicity. Unlike hirsutism, which is usually linked to androgen-driven hair growth in women, hypertrichosis may occur independently of hormonal influence and can affect areas not normally sensitive to androgens. The condition can be present at birth or develop later in life.

Hüpertrichoos is generally categorized as congenital or acquired. Congenital hypertrichosis includes forms present from birth, such as congenital generalized hypertrichosis and hypertrichosis lanuginosa, where fine hair or dense hair covers large skin areas. Hypertrichosis cubiti refers to excess hair on the elbows. Acquired hypertrichosis arises after birth and can be associated with systemic illnesses, malnutrition, or exposure to certain medications or toxins.

Causes of hüpertrichoos are diverse. Genetic mutations can underlie congenital forms and may be inherited in different patterns. Acquired hypertrichosis can result from illnesses such as cancer or severe chronic disease, endocrine disturbances, or medications including certain antiretroviral drugs, cyclosporine, diazoxide, and, less commonly, other drugs. In some cases the cause remains unknown (idiopathic).

Diagnosis relies on clinical examination and patient history, with attention to the distribution of hair growth and any underlying conditions. Differential diagnosis includes hirsutism and other dermatologic or endocrine disorders. In some cases genetic testing or hormonal assessment may be performed to identify an underlying mutation or contributing condition.

Management focuses on removing or reducing excessive hair through methods such as shaving, waxing, plucking, laser hair removal, or electrolysis. Treating any underlying disease or stopping a causative medication can lead to improvement in some acquired cases. The prognosis varies with the form and cause; congenital hypertrichosis tends to be persistent, while acquired cases may regress if the underlying factor is addressed.
