Granittmagmaderived is a coined term used to describe materials and processes thought to originate from granitoid magmas, specifically silica-rich magmas that crystallize in the continental crust. The term is not standard in most geology glossaries, and when used it generally denotes rocks, melts, or geochemical signatures that trace their origin to granitic or granitoid magmas rather than to mantle-derived mafic magmas.

Formation and scope: Granitoid magmas produce a range of intrusive and, less commonly, extrusive rocks, including granite, granodiorite, tonalite, quartz monzonite, and related compositions. Granittmagmaderived materials can form through fractional crystallization, crustal assimilation, and magma mixing within large crustal magma bodies. Partial melting of existing crustal rock can remobilize granitoid material to generate new granitoid-derived melts that contribute to subsequent magmatic events. The concept covers both primary granitoid rocks and rocks whose geochemical character has been altered by interaction with surrounding crust.

Geochemical and isotopic characteristics: Rocks described as granittmagmaderived typically exhibit high silica content and elevated alkalis, with substantial potassium in many granitoid suites. They often show enrichment in light rare earth elements and distinctive isotope systems (for example Sr and Nd) that indicate a crustal source. Common trace-element patterns may include variably enriched incompatible elements and, in some cases, negative Nb-Ta anomalies associated with crustal contamination or crystallization in crustal settings.

Occurrence and significance: Granitoid-derived magmatism is a major component of continental crust formation and evolution, forming large plutons and batholiths and influencing regional geochemistry and metamorphism. It is also associated with mineralization in some crustal settings, including granitic-related ore deposits.
