Goldcovered (also written gold-covered or gold coated) refers to a surface treatment in which a layer of gold is applied to a base material. The gold layer may be very thin and is intended to confer gold's appearance and properties, such as corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity, without the cost of solid gold.

Common methods include electroplating, where a thin layer of gold is deposited from a solution using an electric current; immersion (chemical) plating, where the base metal is replaced by gold ions; physical vapor deposition (PVD) such as sputtering; and gold leaf or gold wash, where a thin sheet or paint containing gold is adhered to the surface. Thickness ranges vary: electroplated layers often range from about 0.1 to a few micrometers; PVD layers can be similar or thinner; gold leaf is extremely thin, while gold-filled products have a much thicker gold layer bonded to the base metal, usually above 1/20 by weight.

Applications include jewelry and decorative items, electronics connectors and contacts for corrosion resistance and reliable conductivity, and medical devices such as implants and instruments. Goldcovered surfaces can achieve luster similar to solid gold but are more affordable and customizable.

Durability: gold is relatively inert but a thin layer can wear or chip, exposing base metal. Care includes avoiding harsh cleaners and abrasives; gold-plated parts may be sensitive to cleaning agents containing chlorine or sulfur compounds. In some contexts, the gold underlayer determines color and wear characteristics.

Compared with gold plating, gold-filled and vermeil offer thicker gold layers and greater durability. The term 'goldcovered' is not a standard technical term in all industries, and specific specifications such as thickness, adhesion, and base metal are defined by standards or manufacturer data sheets.
