ghoomar

Ghoomar is a traditional folk dance from Rajasthan, India, performed by women during festive occasions such as weddings, fairs, and community celebrations. The name derives from the Rajasthani word ghoomna, meaning to swirl or spin, which describes the dance’s defining movement.

In performance, dancers wear voluminous ghagra (long skirts), choli, and odhani in bright colors and embroidery. Groups form a circle or semi-circle, and the dancers swirl gracefully while keeping time with claps and the accompaniment of traditional drums and other percussion. Arm and hand movements are expressive, and the women often raise their hands or weave patterns above their heads during the song.

Songs accompanying Ghoomar are in Rajasthani or Marwari and revolve around themes of love, honor, and daily life. The dance emphasizes coordinated group movement over individual display, with a lead performer guiding the circle and others following its tempo.

Historically, Ghoomar is associated with Rajasthan's Rajput communities, particularly in the Mewar region, and it has become a symbol of hospitality and cultural identity.
