Core concepts include replicating the hierarchical organization of tissues, from nano-scale extracellular matrix components to macro-scale architecture; incorporating gradient stiffness and porosity to match different tissue regions; and using materials that can remodel or degrade in concert with healing. Techniques commonly employed are decellularized tissue matrices, hydrogel systems, fibrous composites, and additive manufacturing methods such as 3D printing and electrospinning, which allow controlled porosity, fiber orientation, and multi-material integration.
