Gelclot is a term used to describe gel-based hemostatic agents designed to control bleeding during medical procedures and in trauma care. These products typically consist of a biocompatible hydrogel that can be applied to a bleeding site in various forms, such as a liquid gel, spray, sheet, or powder that forms a gel upon contact with blood. Gelclot formulations may function primarily as a physical barrier, while some variants incorporate bioactive coagulants to accelerate clot formation.

Mechanism of action generally involves creating a matrix that adheres to tissue, concentrates coagulation factors, and supports platelet aggregation. The gel can also absorb fluids at the wound site, helping to concentrate cells and proteins involved in hemostasis. Depending on the formulation, gelclot products may rely on the gel’s physical properties alone or include additives such as thrombin, collagen, gelatin, or chitosan to enhance clotting. Many gel-based agents are designed to be either absorbable or easily removable after the initial bleeding is controlled.
