gaiter

A gaiter is a protective leg covering worn over the shoe or boot to shield the lower leg from water, mud, snow, and debris. They are commonly used in hiking, mountaineering, skiing, forestry, and military field work. Gaiters help prevent debris from entering footwear and reduce leg irritation from brush and snow.

Constructed from synthetic fabrics such as nylon or polyester, often with a waterproof or breathable membrane, gaiters may also use leather or canvas. They usually have an upper closure (Velcro, zippers, or hooks) and an opening along the front or side, plus a strap or underfoot strap to secure around the boot. Tall models reach the lower calf or shin, while ankle-height gaiters cover only the instep and ankle.

Types and features: lightweight rain gaiters for wet conditions; snow gaiters with insulation for cold weather; mountaineering gaiters designed to work with crampons; and technical gaiters with reinforced cuffs and crampon compatibility. Some are insulated for warmth, others uninsulated. Waterproof membranes and breathability are common design considerations.

Care and maintenance: rinse after use to remove dirt, air dry away from direct heat, and reproof fabrics as needed. Do not store gaiters when damp. Check regularly for worn hooks or damaged straps and replace as needed.

History: gaiters evolved from earlier leg coverings such as puttees used in military contexts. Modern gaiters emerged in outdoor and mountaineering use in the 20th century as synthetic fabrics and specialized closures became common.
