In practice, fundists may span a range of investment styles, from value investing to growth-oriented approaches, as long as the core discipline centers on fundamental data and qualitative factors. The term is widely used in investment communities but is not a formal credential. It can be used descriptively or, at times, pejoratively by those who favor technical or quantitative methods over fundamental judgment.

Critiques of fundist approaches note that fundamental analysis relies on forecasts and assumptions that can be uncertain, and that intrinsic value is not directly observable. Market prices can remain inefficient longer than expected, and rapid news or systemic events can disrupt even well-founded analyses. Despite limitations, fundists remain a major strand of investment practice, particularly among long-term, value-oriented and research-driven investors.
